Fissure sealant is a small filling that is placed on the grooves of the biting surface of posterior teeth. The grooves and pits of molars are areas that are particularly difficult to clean thoroughly. Food and bacteria tend to stick to them and cause decay over time.
The sealant forms a protective layer that keeps food and bacteria from getting stuck in the tiny grooves in the teeth and prevents tooth decay.
What’s involved?
The tooth surface is cleaned, prepared with a special solution, and dried. The sealant is then applied and light cured. The procedure is quick, simple and pain-free, usually takes only a few minutes to complete. The patient can eat as per normal straight after having it done.
When should I get it?
Fissure sealants should be applied to the permanent molars of all children as early after eruption as possible, the first molar usually erupted around 6-7 years old and second molar around 12-14 years old.
How long will it last?
Fissure sealants usually last a few years. Just like any other fillings, they do wear off over time. Hence, sealants will need to be checked by the dentist every now and then to make sure that they are intact. Defective sealants will need to be replaced.
