Porcelain veneers or laminates are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded on the front of the teeth.

There are generally about 0.3-0.7mm thick, roughly 2 times the thicknesses of an egg shell.

Benefits of porcelain veneers

They help to improve the overall appearance of one’s teeth by changing the shape, colour and/or alignment of teeth.

How is it done?

Most dental veneers are done in 2 phases, in most instances without any anesthetic (no needles!).

The first step is to make a very conservative modification on the surface of the teeth to create space for the veneer. A dental mould or impression is made of the teeth prepared. In some cases, the patients cannot feel the difference even though the teeth were trimmed or modified.

The next phase involved the fabrication of the veneers by a dental technician. After which, the completed veneers are bonded to the teeth to complete the treatment.

How is the porcelain veneer attached to the tooth?

The thin veneer shell is bonded to the tooth and is also supported by the tooth, therefore, creating a strong, durable and aesthetic restoration.

When is a porcelain veneer not indicated?

Not all patients can benefit from veneers. These patients’ may have one or more of the following conditions that make veneer treatment not feasible:

• Teeth that have significant loss of tooth structure.
• Teeth with little enamel.
• Heavy bite force.
